In southern Britain some roads have been observed which have a second pair of ditches some considerable distance out from the road. They are usually quite small, and serve no obvious practical purpose, which has led to the idea that they may represent a ‘Road Zone’, an area that was off limits for building, farming, etc.

There are no known examples in northern Britain. However, part of the Road between Bowes and Bishop Auckland does have linear banks on each side of the road, set back about 50m from the road which maight serve the same purpose.
